The betrayal of reality
In a field, at the edge of a wooded area, gigantic letters spell out “Ceci n’est pas.” The letters are covered in fabrics bearing the military camouflage pattern. The calligraphy also reminds us early on of René Magritte’s famous painting The Treachery of Reality and its conceptual title “Ceci n’est pas une pipe,” suggesting to the viewer that this is not a pipe but rather a representation of it.
This project questions the acquired link that we make between an advertising writing and a potential function. Here, having no determined function, the writing plays a role of aesthetic relationship with the place without adding meaning. It acts in a self-discourse while disappearing into the landscape, blurring the reading tracks by its statement: This is not what? The sculpture? The landscape? Reality?
